DEEP CRANKIN'

There'd been a surge of late, of Amazonian Catfishes being landed at our favourite lake so the guys were out in full force to snag a few for themselves. Most times it was rewarding for those who put in the effort. Deep crankbaits were the order of the day for these demersal dwellers. Here are some nice fish that brought smiles to those anglers...

The funky Geecrack shoulder bags have become a must-have for landbase anglers around the country. Available in a myriad of colours for all tastes!

Amazonian Redtails are tough and dirty fighters so stout gear is a neccesity when going for them...

Deep cranks like the Megabass Deep-X range are great for this kinda work...

With the Amazonians as the main target, there were many of their lesser cousins thrown in the mix too...

Another crankbait from the Megabass stable - the Cyclone series...

These aggressive Asian Redtails put up a great fight too on stiff gear and locked down drags...

From Jackall Bros comes a crankbait that has shown in recent times - the Mascle Deep range consisting of divers that cover 2.5m, 3.8m and 4+m depths...

Loud vibration lures like this Jackall Bros TN70 also account for many fish here...

Though the big guns were unleashed we seldom leave the ultralight outfits at home. Here the trusty Temujin 'Spider' is put to good use by landing a Golden Cat...

IMA Rock'n Vibe is another lure thats been producing...

Here's a big Asian Red on the Megabass Deep-X...

Pacu react very well to smaller profile lures like this DUO Yurameki sinking pencil...

Its a nice specimen which put up a great effort on the light outfit...

Not to be outdone is the IMA Beast Hunter, a lure which name leaves little to guessing...

Amazonian Reds have a spectacular contrasting colouration...

Deep-X again doesn't disappoint...

The Evergreen Combat Cranks are another effective tool for these hard fighting fish...

They have a surprising turn of speed and are capable of short bursts to snatch lures like this Combat Crank that's been worked with short burns...

The 'Spider' rod provides maximum fun no matter what you hook!

Here this Asian Red fell for the small DUO Ebikko prawn imitation...

The guys who kept to the cranks were being rewarded with very decent fish...

Evergreen Combat Crank in fancy chartreuse colour...

It became the luck of the draw as to which of the two Redtail cousins you would hit...

The Imakatsu IK-Crank series has its following too with the regulars here...

When the bite was hot double and triple hook-ups weren't uncommon...

Fat healthy specimen of Asian Redtail...

Imakatsu Crank in the gob...

Another nice Asian Red...

Imakatsu Crank too...

Here's a Sultan Fish which took an Ikakko by DUO...

This fish went for the Combat Crank abit too enthusiastically...

'Spider' thrills!

Big Asian Redtail on a mini IMA Gunpeki jig...

More double hook-ups...

Double on Evergreen Combat Cranks...

Small Pacu taken on the IMA Gunpeki...

Followed by a hungry Sultan Fish which chased down the jig...

IMA Gunpeki - not only for saltwater...

Here's a nice hard fighting Pacu...

The brand new DUO Ryuki 70S picking up where its little brother left off...

Another nice Redtail on cranks...

An example of the perfect brute stick, here the Majorcraft Day's rod is used to good effect by stopping the bulldozer in its tracks...

A beautiful Amazonian...

Megabass Deep-X does it...

Another big Asian Redtail which proved no match for the Evergreen Heracles rod...

Evergreen Combat Crank does the damage...

Double hook-up on the light spin gear...

New Majorcraft Volkey put to good use against this Redtail which took an IMA Melty Nymph lure...

'Spider' took a little longer to tame its adversary but tame it it did!

A big African Walking Catfish!

On the DUO Ryuki 70S...

Another cast and an instant hook-up...

Ryuki 70S does the job...

Another nice Asian Redtail...

What followed was an epic battle with the Temujin 'Spider' against the Amazonian powerhouse. The fish took a DUO Realis Vibe and took great effort to subdue...

You win some, you lose some. Here an epic battle was fought but unfortunately lost with the Majorcraft Crostage ultralight rod...

Another nice Asian Red on the Megabass Deep-X...

This battle was lost as well with the hooks pulling after some time. The Majorcraft Volkey though, did well...

Maximum ultralight fun with the Majorcraft KG Lights...

This big Asian Redtail didn't hesitate to take the miniscule DUO Ikakko lure...
