It's the fishing we love the most. Wading the gin clear beaches, scanning for signs of a low visibility predator hunting out its prey in the shallow abode.
The trick is to see before being seen, so stealth is key. Armed with an ultralight rod (usually from Major Craft) and a little reel filled with 4lb line, covering distance and looking for that trophy is a non-issue. When the hook up comes, the runs are long and hard given the tackle used. Lure casting doesn't get any better...
Bluefin Trevally are a constant flats visitor, and they are aggressive little buggers that go hard on light gear... |
Small poppers like this FEED Lures BELL5 will get their attention... |
One of the trophies of the flats. The Bonefish is a good reason to get wet. The runs are fast and long... |
We've learnt that the DUO Tetraworks Ikakko is a consistent producer of Bones, and rightly so... |
The FEED Lures BELL5 strikes again, accounting for a nice fish. |
A second Bonefish for the morning. This one had the DUO Ikakko sucked in deep... |
Bluefin will give one a whole day of joy with their power and speed. This one reacted to a DUO Spearhead Ryuki Floating model twitched in the shallows... |
The Major Craft KG Lights Aji special on a rampaging Bonefish in skinny water... |
A fat Bonefish after losing another. It lives up to its billing as the 'Ghost of the flats'... |
This one had the DUO Ikakko pinned neatly as it picked it up off the bottom... |
When one finds structure in the form of a rocky outcrop, the Paddletail Snapper usually isn't far. They fight super hard for their size and are primed to find their way back into the cover... |
Like everything else on the flats, they love DUO Ikakkos... |
This particular rock held two Paddletail Snappers... |
And the Ikakko did its thing again... |
The Emperor is another flats visitor and they come in a myriad of species. This Black Blotched version is one of the most common. The DUO Ikakko usually finds them pretty quickly... |
