OF VIBES & JERKS!

At the end of the year we usually get our saltwater plans spoilt by the annual monsoonal rains. Luckily there aren't any lack of options for the budding fisho. So when it came down and we had to stay on land to keep dry, what little pockets the weather allowed, we would have rods in hand, Geecrack bags slung and some freshwater fish to catch.

We are blessed to have access to some rather willing introduced species to cure a casting itch or two. Previous installments saw us after the earlier introduced 'Butterfly' species of Peacock Bass, but this time it was the larger Tucunare or 'Temensis' strain that would provide the challenge...

They are highly aggressive and loud brash lures like this Jackall Bros TN-60 vibration are a perfect trigger for a strike...

The smaller fish hunt in packs and will compete between themselves for a passing lure like this Jackson Athlete Vibe...

A larger fish displaying the more contrasting 'Assu' colour pattern. This fish took a Jackall Bros TN-60 as well, cast and worked with the highly versatile Evergreen Kaleido 'Spin Cobra Q7' with matching Opus-1 reel from the same manufacturer...

They share the waterways with another introduced specie - the Zebra Cichlid. Less aggressive but still tempted by a passing TN-60 vibration...

You can't go wrong with the smaller Jackall Bros TN-50 in a natural colour when the fishing gets tough...

On some occasions though, the bigger lures like this Jackall Bros Mag Squad Minnow does the trick...

Like all Peacock Bass species they react to speed. Fast jerked baits like the DUO Spearhead Ryuki hardly fail...

Sometimes you need slightly deeper lures to get to where they hang. The Megabass Margay does this nice one in...

In the gob is a nicely chewed DUO Deep Feat, a lure which casts well and swims with extreme realism...

On light gear like the Majorcraft KG Lights these fish are maximum fun!

They are willing topwater feeders as well, this Jackson RA Popper is taken deep...

Some of the bigger fish take some fooling. And once hooked do give a pretty spirited fight, even on stout gear...

Realistic swimming lures like the IMA Ikuri 60 shone through...

When the fish grew weary the ultralight outfits came into their own. With the subtle finesse approach and lithe lures like the Zipbaits Raphael, it was game on again...

Small is big! IMA Sukari 50S on the KG Lights and Zipbaits Raphael on the Temujin 'Spin Cobra'

Another nice fish taken on a long cast IMA Gunpeki mini jig...

And when the fish staved off the small lures, back came the bigger ones to add to their confusion...

Too good to be true. The DUO Realis Vibe looks almost too real in the water...

A pretty nice fish to end the day. Majorcraft KG Lights ensured all fights were a little out of control!

Another very effective vibration lure - the IMA Koume in all its sizes catch many!

PESTA POP!

After the shortened trip last month due to bad weather, we were back again. Hopes weren't high due to the forcast of stormy rains for the three impending days, but fishermen always seem to keep optimistic and this time it paid off as the weather held and the fish came on the chew. It is trips like this that make you forget the bad ones and keep plying. Here it is in pictures...

The usual suspects when it comes to rod selection for those on board. Evergreen Poseidons joined by the relatively new Majorcraft Giant Killings...

The new Shout! Flash jig got things going with this little Grouper...

Then a bigger cousin, an Estuary Cod came onboard, courtesy of the Shout! Flash laced with the Shout! Rockfish Assist hook. Was good fun on the parabolic Giant Killing Slow Pitch Special rod...

Here a Majorcraft Alexander jig rod is maxed out, but unfortunately the fish won its freedom shortly...

It was a double hook up of Cobias and the second one was landed. It took a Shout! Shab Shab jig - the go-to jig for these waters...

A nice Cobia. They always fight hard...

Majorcraft Giant Killing loaded up and bearing the grunt of a good fish from the depths...

A beautiful GT which took a Shout! Flash jig. These guys go hard! And the Shout! Twin Assist Hooks held well...

Fingermark Snappers are always welcome onboard. This one fell for a Shout! Stay worked slow with the Giant Killing Slow Pitch Special...

And here's the said rod in action, displaying that perfect bend when loaded...

Another GT hits the deck courtesy of the Shout! Stay jig with the Shout! Rockfish Assist hook...

We seemed to have found a school of GTs hovering around a wreck. This one liked the FCL SL-Z jig but was no trouble for the Evergreen Poseidon PE-2.5 jig stick...

More GTs hit the deck. this one on a Shout! Shab Shab jig...

Giant Killing rod getting work done...

With yet another Giant Trevally on jig. Shab Shab hits again!

A small Golden Snapper from a shallower reef. This one had no qualms hammering the IMA Ro jig with Rockfish Assist...

Next up we found some willing GTs on the surface with poppers...

It was pandemonium as many fish were hit, dropped or couldn't be handled. This Jackson Pintail victim gave the angler a massive workout on the light Majorcraft Offblow offshore rod...

In the melee were some Bigeye Trevallies too and this was a big one, taken on the FCL Labo Ebipop worked with a Majorcraft Offblow Hiramasa Popping rod...

Another to add to the species list. A beautiful Rainbow Runner that took the Jackson Pintail cast into the frenzy. It went hard and fast on the light Offblow casting outfit...

When the tide stopped out came the micro stuff. Temujin 'Spider' made short work of this Snapper which took the Bassday Bungy Metal II jig...

The lull didn't last too long, as the Majorcraft Offblow is loaded up again by a nice Jackson Pintail muncher...

Another nice GT which gave a good run for the money!

Subsequent cast found another hungry GT on the prowl. A decent fish which took the FCL Labo CSP Pencil without hesitation. Even on the stout FCL Labo UC74 rod, the side-hooked fish took some coaxing...

Queenfish are never far behind when the fish are on the boil, and they turned up to take a swipe at poppers too...

Rainbow Runners of this size sure aren't afraid of big surface lures. This Fisherman Crazy Swimmer sure got its attention...

As it did with this Giant Trevally too. The FCL Labo UC74 was magical to cast and work these lures with...

A big Queenie is always lots of fun, not to mention pretty hard work to get to the boat when they are hooked in the side. The FCL Labo Ebipop can always be relied upon to produce the goods...

And further exemplifies by landing this other decent GT shortly after...

As the sun sets the fish continue to feed with ruthless abandon, often hitting lures like this FCL Labo Squidpen in shallow bommies...

FCL Ebipop strikes again! A very nice fish indeed!

And the FCL Squidpen ends the day on a high with yet another GT in the dark...

Next morning the popping slows so its off to jig. This Estuary Cod was no match for the heavy Poseidon jig rod used to work this Shout! Flash jig...

Lumo Shout! Flash jig accounts for this small Spanish Mackeral...

Some guys get lucky with some huge Golden Snappers while others have to contend with brute Cobias as the whole place lit up. The longish Shout! Width jig accounts for this nice fish...

One of the biggest Lizardfish we've seen!

Amongst the Cobia frenzy were some really nice Goldies. All aboard hooked something, though many Cobias were lost with thrown hooks or busted lines. The Shout! Flash jig is carving a name for itself as a top producing jig, rewarding this angler with another big Golden Snapper...

This is an example of one of the smaller Cobias. Most of those hooked were 15-25kg and showed lots of strength...

Majorcraft Giant Killing spin rod versus Cobia...

A nice Cobia on the Shout! Shab Shab jig...

All fish love the Shab Shab...

More boatside Cobia action. Majorcraft Alexander rod put through the paces...

Another good fish indeed!

Followed shortly by yet another big Fingermark on the long Tacko jig...

More multiple Cobia hook ups result in more fish hitting the deck. Shab Shab does it again...

Some fish take longer to land than others. But everyone is having fun!

Big Cobias are everywhere on this day...

We lost quite a few jigs to these toothy predators but managed to hook a few too. Here a small Mack took a Shout! Width jig thats half its length...

The Evergreen Javeline Jet jig accounts for this Mack...

Amidst the commotion someone hooks a truly rare Squid from the depths. A big one too!

An Estuary Cod of the Goldspot variety, landed on a CB One Zero jig...

Followed by its deep dwelling cousin on a Shab Shab jig...

More Macks for the table...

Double trouble with the Grouper family. On the Javeline Jet and CB One Zero jigs...

More tag team action with Macks on the next drift. Javeline Jet and Shout! Flash score...

A very greedy Snapper on a Shout! Width...

And a decent Estuary Cod, goes to show the myriad of size and species that will take the same Shout! Width jig laced with the Rockfish Assist. This 14 pounder took some stopping on the light Giant Killing Slow Pitch Special...

At the other end this small Grouper had no trouble trying to eat this Shout! Stay jig with the Rockfish Assist...

Another Mack destined for the esky, on a Tacko jig...

Jackpot of the trip. A 24 pound Estuary Cod on the Shout! Stay jig and Rockfish Assist hook combo. Made the Poseidon rod work on max capacity as it tried to bury itself in the nearest hole...

Largest Mack of the trip was hooked on a Sevenseas Hooker jig and lucky not to be lost!

Fingermark Bream are a beautifully marked fish, this one shows why it is thus named...

Shallow reefs call for smaller jigs. They don't come any better than the IMA Gunpeki jigs!

The trip is capped off by another Estuary Cod, this one went for a Sevenseas Revolver jig bounced off the bottom. The Rockfish Assist doing its trickery...
