SPINNING THE ROCKS!

Another report from Japan this. We've seen plenty of this, chucking lures into wild white water, but never experienced anything remotely similar. So this was our chance.

Taking advantage of half a day of decent weather we went beyond the safety of a secluded bay and into the wild expose stuff. Target? A few small rocky outcrops just offshore. The little boat we were in could only cop it on good days but we had faith in our Captain, Morishita-san.

The serenity of the bay can be deceiving. But early starts ensures at least some calm before the howling. The boat is prepped as we arrive at the harbour...

With gear ready we gun offshore. Against the exposed coast...

After over an hour of rough riding we could cast. We would pepper rocky outcrops like this with lures...

Opting to have the stability of a lipless vibe, we put on a DUO Realis Vibration 68 and find this greedy Japanese Grunt or more commonly refered to as Isaki locally. It is a tasty fish for the table and highly revered locally...

This was what we had come out here for. The rough waters are home to the venerable Blackfin Seabass, known locally as Hira Suzuki. They hunt in the whitewash and lures which find the mark will get belted. This time the Evergreen True Round lure worked with the Evergreen Light Cavalry spin rod does the trick...

Meanwhile with the DUO Realis Vibration it is hard to get past the Japanese Grunts. They seem to love it...

It is amazing to find Snapper feeding in the shallow wash. We normally associate these fish with deeper water but it goes to show you never know. One thing is for sure, this one liked the Evergreen True Round shallow runner...

Working the vibes a little deeper finds this customer. It is a Japanese Seabass and not the Blackfin variety which we would more commonly find out here. Anyhow it gave a good show on the Evergreen Kaleido spin rod...

The lure used was the magical IMA Slap Honey vibe...

Any pleasant surprise with Snapper number two. They really go hard as they try to bury you in the rocks. This one liked the IMA Slap Honey worked in the wash too...

At last after dropping a few frisky jumpers we finally get another Hira Suzuki to the boat. This one on the DUO Bay Ruf V-75 displays the distinct thick body and the beautiful sheen which make them such a gorgeous fish...

The species list continues to climb as we get another pleasant surprise in the form of this large Black Bream which displayed much strength in the wash. This Kurodai is an old fish and it is evident on its body...

It went for the DUO Bay Ruf V-75 too. What an awesome tool for this type of fishing. Like all fishes we quickly release this old guy after a few quick shots...

The winds pick up and the seas get really uncomfortable in the minute boat. This Snapper on the Evergreen True Round is a last second bonus before we split...

We leave the waves to continue pummeling the rocky shore with a heavy heart. This session had been utterly challenging and enjoyable at the same time. An absolute experience...
