Another one of those trips we try to do as often as possible: the perfect long weekend out at sea on our fave boat. Most trips encompass a little bit of everything, from light to heavy. And this one wasn't any different. Blessed with decent weather and decent fishing, we couldn't ask for more...
Once on board it was all hands on deck as the gear is prepped... |
Hard to hide the enthusiasm... |
At the first spot, we find at least one Goldie biting. The Shout! Flash jig did the trick... |
Then a rare catch in the form of an African Pompano taken on the heavy FEED Madai... |
Didn't take too long to find another willing customer on the wicked Madai jig... |
We seem to have found a healthy congregation of Golden Snapper, as illustrated by this muscular one taken on the Shout! Shab Shab jig worked on the powerful Evergreen Poseidon Spin Jerker jig rod... |
And another one hits the deck courtesy of a Shout! Stay jig worked with the long strokes of the Major Craft Giant Killing Long Fall Special rod... |
Next up we barrel along and find some actively feeding thugs. These GTs go hard on the relatively light jig gear and are absolute fun. This one took a liking to a Xesta Nitro jig... |
Both fast and slow worked jigs appealed to them, and this Evergreen Caprice jig did the trick but was lost on the way up... |
A hefty GT on a similar Evergreen Caprice jig pitched with the Evergreen Poseidon Slow Jerker overhead rod... |
The bite goes on with another GT caught with an unconventional new lure... |
Its the new Jackall Anchovy Missile vertical jig that found this curious fish... |
Easily the biggest GT on jig of the trip, this bruiser took some beating... |
It fell for a Xesta After Burner, a jig synonymous for some great catches of late... |
Different drifts bring us through varied schools of fish. This Golden Snapper is the next to be fooled by the Xesta Nitro jig... |
And is followed closely by a smaller GT on the same Nitro jig... |
The Snappers are still around and its the luck of the draw... |
This time the CB One Zero One jig scores... |
In between bruisers we encounter some common Groupers that fall for the enticing jigs not much bigger than themselves. This is a Xesta Flap slow jig... |
Point illustrated again with another falling victim to the Shout! Shab Shab jig... |
Then a more decent Grouper is hit and landed, falling for the FEED Madai... |
A rare capture from the depths. It didn't feel like much on the strong Giant Killing Long Fall Special rod... |
Victim of the Xesta Flap jig... |
The Xesta Flap scores again with a nice Goldie to wrap the day's fishing up... |
At night the fishing was slow and besides a few Bigeye Trevs like this one on the Xesta Nitro there was little else... |
Next morning we get to witness a Major Craft Crostage Light Popping Special loaded up to the max bright and early... |
A hefty GT is the culprit... |
It went for a Jackson Mr Dekai minnow hard and got pinned... |
The rest of the morning's topwater action was mediocre but this nice GT on the Major Craft Crostage rod was a trophy... |
The FEED Lures BELL60 scores this time out... |
Next up we get a hook up in the wash and the Major Craft Giant Killing Hiramasa Special is loaded up... |
It wasn't the typical deep run but it was weighty none the less... |
Turned out to be a very sought-after Spanish Mackeral, an awesome capture... |
It fell for a very life-like FEED SLASH65 swimbait... |
We were almost about to give up after a slow couple of hours hard casting, when this GT decided it needed to take a swipe at a passing fleeing baitfish... |
That 'fleeing baitfish' would be none other than DUO's latest release, the Rough Trail Aomasa in the bigger 188 guise... |
An Evergreen Poseidon Spin Jerker bent meant a good fish for sure... |
After the topwater onslaught we found a GT hanging deep with a Shout! Shab Shab jig... |
The Shout! Shab Shab scores again with a nice Grouper for the table... |
The FEED Madai is an irresistible snack for many species like this Snapper... |
And this Grouper too... |
The Shout! Strobe slow jig worked deep nails a decent Grouper... |
The FEED Madai continues to terrorise little reef monsters... |
Meanwhile the Xesta Flap slow jig does its trick on a Golden Snapper... |
And the Xesta Flap is on a roll with a nice Estuary Cod up next... |
No sign of stopping as another Goldie falls prey... |
Slow pitching with the Giant Killing Slow Pitch Special and the Xesta Flap pays dividends with this Estuary Cod... |
Big Xesta Nitro with small Snapper captive... |
But the Xesta Nitro's next capture is indeed special - a rare Javelin Fish... |
Another rare capture in these parts - a nice Emperor on the Evergreen Poseidon Slow Jerker... |
The FCL Labo SL jig proves adept at bottom hugging Groupers... |
Its on a roll... |
With three in succession... |
That night the fish left us alone but there were a few curious Bigfin Reef Squid that were vary but one eventually fell for the Evergreen Egi Bancho lure... |
Not long after another is fooled with the DUO Dsquid lure... |
The last morning's fishing was a tad slow but we manage an Estuary Cod that put up a struggle on the Major Craft Giant Killing Slow Pitch Special... |
It fell for the Bassday Bottom Contact jig... |
We end the trip with some pelagic action with a nice Queenfish... |
Like many before it, it fell for a Xesta After Burner jig... |
