This catch report is brought to you by the letters p.o.s.e.i.d.o.n.
Fun aside, this series by Evergreen has been the rod of choice for more anglers this side of the peninsular and has grown strength to strength. We are happy to be part of the process in introducing many new products this these to our market and will continue to do so in years to come.
This trip brings us to the East Coast once again.
Our hunting ground of sorts, the myriad of species on offer is second to none and we couldn't ask for me on our doorsteps. We can't start off in any better way...
...than being hooked up!
On the first drop, we're in business...
A Diamond Trevally - what we came here for!
That's the funky FCL Labo CS jig at work...
Almost instantaneously we are onto more fish.
Here's another nice Diamond taken on the Jackall Bros Laser jig...
Looks like the right place to be drifting in, a third Diamond.
This time on an IMA Gunpeki jig...
Here's a nice Golden Trevally to add a little variation...
But they were mostly Diamond Trevallies, which like this one that took the FCL CS jig, gave really good accounts of themselves on the light jig gear like the Poseidon Spin Jerker Lights...
The average size from the school was decent to say the least, and each fight would last at least 10 minutes. More than enough adrenalin shots to keep everyone onboard on a high...
IMA Gunpeki is the jig of choice for many...
Another Goldie, also on the IMA Gunpeki...
The Jackson Gallop is another go-to jig for all shallow tropical waters, its anchovy profile fits most dietary requirements for countless inhabitants...
It shows its prowess with another fish in succession - a nice little Golden Trevally...
When the fish grew tired of Gunpekis, Lasers and Gallops being dropped from the floating alien object above, a change of pattern usually does the trick. And this Evergreen Javeline Jet certainly did put the fish back on the bite again...
Another worthwhile addition to any jig bag is the Evergreen Caprice Kid, a personal favourite that accounted for this Longfin Trevally, yet another species...
Longfin Trevallies can be finicky feeders and we find star performers like the Gunpeki are only one of few that these fish fall for on a regular basis. For your info, this fish above is one of the bigger ones you'll find...
Not to be outdone, another Gunpeki scores yet another fine specimen...
Next we moved in on a school of smaller Diamonds but they were just as much a handful on the light gear. Downsizing to a 30g Caprice Kid did the trick...
Going even lighter than those from the Poseidon stable, the Majorcraft Offblow Light is as much fun as you'll get on a stick...
IMA Gunpeki again, need we say more?
Going small accounted for yet another Diamond Trev. The Tacko jig is an affordable alternative to the Japanese big guns...
When jigging it pays to be attentive to wind, tides, current and swell, and to change tactics accordingly. When the currents picked up it made sense to slap on a heavier jig to counter-act the swift drift that were also the consequence of the building wind...
That heavier jig would be the radical FCL Labo SL in 60g guise. Though chunkier, it retains the small overall shape which is so important when fishing here. Coupled with a slinky flutter-fall, its hard to fail...
With good jigs you never know what will latch on, this Gunpeki even fooled a Flounder...
More Diamond Trevallies and more smiles...
The Jackson Gallop is hard to beat, and is great value too!
Another Gallop victim, as the fish were locked onto feasting on anchovies...
Just as much are anchovies part of their diet, squid also are a big reason the fish are here. The IMA Gunpeki in stunning silver worked slow emulates the tasty celopods magnificently, as shown by another great capture...
The luck is seriously in the draw as another Golden Trevally flaps aboard, the steady stream of captures on the Jackson Gallop is mounting up...
When wind and current allow, it is fantastic fun to drop small jigs on ultra-light gear. Most fights are epic, and when you hook up a Diamond Trevally you are assured no less. The micro editions of the IMA Gunpekis perform as well as their heavier brothers...
But the Gallop is still holding its own...
Mini IMA Gunpeki racks up the species list with a small Goldspot Trevally...
Even a Blenny...
And a Basslet...
And a Blue Runner...
Another small Goldspottie...
Then its back to the Diamonds and another for the Gallop jig...
And another beautiful specimen bathed in perfect lighting, taken on the Gallop...
For ultralight thrills let us introduce the Evergreen Temujin 'Spider' - a rod originally designed for targeting bruiser bass with light lures. It has a soft nimble tip coupled with a killer backbone, as illustrated above...
A big Diamond on light stuff makes the sweat and pain all worthwhile!
The Jackall Bros Laser jig goes for this kill...
We didn't forget to do abit of casting despite the onslaught on jigs, and this nice Mack reminded us of a different type of fun...
Nothing shouts Mack-killer more than the popular Jackson Pintail Tune...
But it wasn't only the Macks that got into the act, a passing school of Cobia couldn't really resist this offering...
They were pretty hefty fish that had to be muscled in - and that was the job of the trusy ol' Poseidon Ocean Hunter offshore rod...
Quick turn-around meant we had three in succession, can't ask for more!
