DOWNUNDER - 'FINS!

We continue Downunder with a fish that is as mystical as they are elusive, and elusive they prove to be as we spend days and nights attempting to score a hit. Much time and effort was spent chasing these 'fins and when we finally hit paydirt the feelings were indescribable. Here's the journey...

3am starts were not out of the question when chasing these fish. As a consolation the sights were impressive and solidarity consumes you...

Most mornings ended with nought in the bay so we chased some other species as well, like some ever-present Spotted Spanish Mackeral, which were easy targets on the effective IMA Gun Peki jigs...

Losses were high against these toothy speedsters but it was a chance everyone was willing to take...

They weren't big but on ultralight gear like our Evergreen Temujin 'Spiders' they sure were fun...

Back in the bay we spent countless hours combing the grounds in search of the holy grail. We did encounter an impressive bycatch in the form of this monster Flathead which gave a good account of itself against the light Major Craft Skyroad spin stick...

It fell for a brightly-coloured Jackall Ammonite Shad soft plastic. What a fantastic capture!

Some of these waters were relatively deep and we combed the various water columns in search of our quarry. Apart from the ever-effective soft plastics we also employed vibes of various forms. Some examples include the IMA Koume & Spin Gulf, and DUO Bay Ruf & Tide Vib Score...

After a few long days we finally get a break and after a strong tussle we get colour on a beautiful specimen of the Threadfin Salmon. Elation set in as the Major Craft Arrival baitcast rod was laid down on deck...

Without hesitation, this DUO Tide Vib Score was sucked in. Everything held tight and the photo says it all...

We had stumbled upon a school moving up and down river feeding along its path. And few casts later we come up tight again, this time on a lighter spin outfit with the Evergreen Kaleido 'Spin Cobra Q7' put through its paces. Not wanting to jeopardise the rare encounter, one couldn't be careful enough. With some coaxing it finally came aboard courtesy of the environet and was released into the water after a few quick pics, just like the one before...

The DUO Bay Ruf vibe is sucked deep like the earlier fish and the light hooks did its job well to hold fast...

Suddenly the sunsets were more spectacular as we made our way back home...
