THE MIGHT OF LIGHT!

The addiction to ultralight tackle fishing is both contagious and unavoidable. Recently we got a chance to share new tackle and techniques with guys who had never experienced these forms previously. The results were as expected, there was no way one could come away from it without experiencing great thrill and pleasure. Needless to say, all were hooked.

It all started as a leisurely getaway upon invitation by generous friends to visit their property and spend some time on the water. But all was forgotten, including our missed flight earlier that morning, as we piled the gear aboard and revved towards the horizon.

Tackle Source is always where the action is!

Casting a Jackson Pintail at some surface activity, we get the first strike courtesy of an enthusiastic Mack Tuna...

In the melee a small jig dropped is naturally taken...

This fight would be a long one on the ultralight Major Craft Airlights spin rod. But all smiles for the angler!

A massive Goldspot Trevally is boated after the epic battle, and what a fish to start the session!

The micro IMA Gun Peki is sucked in and the 4lb mainline held up as the angler exercised much patience...

The bite goes on with a small Long Fin Trevally next...

The small IMA Gun Peki is the usual culprit...

As it is again, for this baby Big Eye Trevally. Great fun on the light stuff...

The might of light indeed. Here's a Major Craft Skyroad Aji rod bearing the grunt...

A fat Emperor on the IMA Gun Peki gives a smile...

The Long Fin Trevs go on the chew as the sun sets...

And the IMA Gun Peki continues to shine...

The Major Craft Skyroad Aji is kept busy...

Another Long Fin Trevally falls for the IMA Gun Peki...

And its repeated with the next capture. These things go hard on the Major Craft ultralight KG Lights rod...

The next morning we get busy with an oblidging Long Fin Trevally. This one fell for a handmade prototype jig model we were testing out...

There was no shortage of species. A pesky Barracuda was unlucky to be pinned when it went for the IMA Gun Peki...

The list gets a boost in the form of this beaut Rainbow Runner, also on the IMA Gun Peki...

The IMA Gun Peki continues its assault on the reefies...

Amongst the reef rats we get a solid hook up which troubles the Major Craft Giant Killing for a few tense seconds before it gets tamed. A beautiful fish for the table - a Coral Trout which got fooled by the Xesta After Burner jig...

Another Xesta After Burner jig victim, this time a nice Emperor...

Alas we hook up a great fighter from the midwater. The Major Craft Crostage Light Jig Special gets its work cut out...

A nice African Pompano or Pennantfish, a great fighter in itself but this one was side hooked for extra thrills...

The prototype jig is bare lead with a hologram sticker stuck only on one side, but it did the trick and says alot about the design and action. Its test on this trip reaffirmed our confidence in the product and we can't wait to see production...

Meanwhile the old faithful IMA Gun peki jig conitnues to shine with another nice Coral Trout...

Here's the IMA Gun Peki again with a red-eared Emperor...

And again with a small Snapper...

All manner of pretty reef species fall for the mini jigs, especially the IMA Guns...

The prototype jig in a lighter guise does just as well with a fat Emperor on the KG Lights outfit...

Even a Soapfish gets fooled into taking an IMA Gun Peki...

Another strong battle ends with the landing of a nice Rainbow Runner on the IMA Gun. These fish go real hard on the light gear...

A rare one to add to the species list - a Blue Runner on the IMA Gun Peki...

And another IMA Gun munching Goldspot Trevally, albeit a much smaller one...

More IMA Gun victims queue up to get their photos taken...

There's no discrimination of species. As long as they fall for a jig they are a worthy fish...

Even small Wrasses aren't spared by the IMA Gun Peki...

A Greasy grouper is a welcome change. No change in the jig though, the IMA Gun is No.1...

Small Goldspot Trevs hunt in packs and they love IMA Guns too...

A small Grass Emperor isn't afraid of the relatively large jig. All fish think the IMA Gun Peki is food...

As the sun sets on another lovely day the Long Fin Trev bite heats up. These speedsters are snaffling IMA Guns before they can even be sunk...

The Major Craft Airlights spin rod works overtime. Oh, and what a sun set...

These fish are magical, with their filaments flailing in the breeze...

IMA Gun Peki in gob. Not uncommon...

These Long Fin Trevallies go hard regardless of size. That's the beauty of ultralight gear and the enjoyment it brings...

The IMA Gun Peki again...

More work for the Airlights Rockfish stick...

The fish may be the same specie but the enjoyment is unparalleled...

When in doubt over colours to choose just pick one that has them all. And IMA Guns come in no shortage of colours...

There seems no shortage of Long Fin Trevally in this spot but alas the failing light means this fish is the last for the day...

Next morning we get a short session before the flight out. We waste no time and get into a Rainbow Runner bright and early with the IMA Gun Peki...

We knoew they were around, these big Gold Spot Trevallies. And here's another one to show for our efforts - a beautiful specimen which went super hard on the light gear...

This one fell for a Bassday Bungy Metal II jig, another strong contender in these parts...

We wrap the short session with a Sandy Bream on another prototype works jig, happy in the knowledge these jigs will go on to greater things once they hit production.
Stay tuned for the debut!
